Description
Summary:Order: Orthoptera. Suborder Ensifera (Long-horned Orthoptera). Family: Tettigoniidae. Belongs to the same family as the katydid (accession number 2013.1.667) Found on all continents except Antarctica. Diet: Omnivores, they eat vegetation, seeds, carrion, and other insects. Life Span: About one year. Typically nocturnal. Long-horned grasshoppers, along with other Tettigoniidae, have their hearing organs located on their front legs, not their head. Like other species of grasshopper, when the male long-horned grasshopper rubs his wing covers together, he produces a song that is used to attract females. Each species has its own characteristic song.
