Summary: | In this paper, a methodology is derived to create a mobile GIS field tool from a desktop web service. This process uses the information from within Tephrabase, a database of tephra deposit information, to create a field tool for tephra researchers in Iceland. The data for tephra deposits within Iceland was extracted from Tephrabase and used to create a web map, and a web mapping application, hosted on ArcGIS Online. The web application was then converted into the Android application format and made available on the Google Play Store. The creation of this application serves to discuss the implications and advancement of mobile applications as tools in the future of field studies. |
