Description
Summary:Human wastes production is a necessary result of research and logistic activity in Antarctica. Solid and liquid wastes disposal may lead to irreversible changes of the Antarctic environment. This problem can partly be solved by application of efficient methods of wastewater treatment. Minimum requirements for sewage treatment and disposal are prescribed in The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. Transferring treatment technologies to Antarctica is not simple because of quite a number of reasons. The principles guiding the design of the water disposal systems are firstly, to minimize environmental impact; secondly, to make rational layout for minimizing land occupation; and thirdly, to operate safely and reliably and make the system easy to manage.
