| Summary: | Safety in aviation concerns managing risk rather than its elimination. This is certainly true for aircraft operations to, from and within the Antarctic region. This report looks to a series of accidents and incidents that have occurred in the Antarctic region and the operation policy aimed at avoiding such occurrences.1 This is not an exhaustive account of aviation accidents in the Antarctic. Rather, this report defines a pattern that has formed from the similarities in causative elements related to aircraft accidents. The trends provide an interesting insight to what factors are peculiar to the Antarctic region. The analysis then turns to the whether aviation safety policy is suitable in identifying the unique problems occurring in Antarctic aviation operations including recent developments in adventure tourism aviation. |
