Description
Summary:The Antarctic environment is renowned for being among the most extreme on earth, presenting a range of challenges to any organism living there. One of the most successful species to do so is the Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). Emperor penguins owe this capability to the evolution of a variety of anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations. This review sets out to explore the relationship between some of these adaptations, as well as the energetic requirements for living and breeding on the ice.
