Summary:This article outlines northern circumpolar treeline research as discussed at the Fennoscandian Tree-line Conference held at Kevo and Abisko in 1977, and the Northern Quebec Treeline Conference held at Poste-de-la-Baleine, Quebec in 1981. A description of post conference visits is given. The article concludes with the recommendations formulated at the first treeline conference. These recommendations focussed on cooperatively attempting greater knowledge of "ecology of the delicately balanced transition zone between the forest and the treeless part of the north."
