Sea ice in the Baltic Sea. Geographical study and environmental and societal implications from the comparative study of the Bay of Bothnia (Oulu, Finland) and the Gulf of Riga (Latvia)

The study deals with the seasonal ice growth and melting phenomena on littorals and marine areas in the Gulfs of Bothnia and Riga (Baltic Sea), and the sea ice impact on their physical and human environments. The purpose is to understand climatic and marine processes of ice formation and break-up of...

Description
Summary:The study deals with the seasonal ice growth and melting phenomena on littorals and marine areas in the Gulfs of Bothnia and Riga (Baltic Sea), and the sea ice impact on their physical and human environments. The purpose is to understand climatic and marine processes of ice formation and break-up of littoral waters and coastal sea, and on their environmental, economical and societal consequences. The interest of this research lies in the comparative analysis it generates through both environmental and societal approaches, close to the geographical issues of Nature and Societies. The study of the Baltic Sea littorals is based on two distinct areas : the regions of Oulu in Finland and Riga in Latvia. The comparison of those two regions politically, economically and culturally different is interesting to understand the diversity of reactions and adaptations to the human management of this natural constraint imposed by those sea ice phenomena. It is therefore, in this work, to analyse the characteristics of Baltic Sea ice and to discuss about the diversity of the forms of human occupation and adaptation of societies of these phenomena. Finally, are emphasized the socio-economic implications of the historical variability of sea ice conditions and those of the contemporary climate warming on traditional and current winter activities and maritime shipping.
