Description
Summary:The xlsx files contain one "ReadMe" tab and one "Data" tab regarding the chemistry of peatland soils or porewater. The "ReadMe" tab details the variable name, units, description, citation (optional), laboratory, and vocabulary terms. The "Data" tab contains data collected from twelve wetlands across the Interior Plains of northwestern Canada in July 2021. We collected shallow groundwater samples from three locations per wetland by hand or with a peristaltic pump with Teflon tubing. A 10×10 cm section of soil from a microtopographic hollow was removed to ~20 cm depth and allowed to fill with water and settle from disturbance for ≥1 hour. At each subsite, we collected soil cores from a microtopographic hollow with 5 cm diameter Lexan core tubes to a depth of 12 cm. We sampled adjacent hollows from which water samples were collected to ensure the presence of representative porewater. Three separate cores for soil chemistry analysis and microbial composition were combined at 2 cm intervals into sterile Ziplock bags, homogenized, and frozen at -20°C in the field. Data were analyzed at the Biogeochemical Analytical Service Laboratory (University of Alberta), Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry Research Group (University of Münster), Natural Resources Analytical Laboratory (University of Alberta), Catchment and Wetland Science Research Group (University of Alberta), Water Quality Center (Trent University).
