Abstract: Frederick Dally, who later became a well-known photographer, wrote this letter to his mother while he was a passenger on the British ship Cyclone in the South Atlantic Ocean, while the ship was en route to Victoria, British Columbia. The letter includes sketches of constellations, geological features he observed from the ship, and of whales. Scope and Content Note: Frederick Dally wrote this letter to his mother while he was a passenger on the British ship Cyclone . Biographical/Historical Note: Frederick Dally, born in England, left England on the passenger ship Cyclone , heading to Vancouver, British Columbia. He arrived in September 1862. He was around twenty-four years old at this time. He later opened a dry goods store and began a career in photography.
