The letter includes sketches of constellations that can be seen from south of the equator, geological features he observed from the ship, and of whales. Biographical/Historical Note: Frederick Dally, born in England, left England on the passenger ship Cyclone , heading to Vancouver, British Columbia. He arrived in September 1862. He was around twenty-four years old at this time. He later opened a dry goods store and began a career in photography.
