Summary:Literature is the arena of word which is used properly to portray life from generation to generation. Therefore, by reading literature, we, human beings, are carried away to dissolve into our own lives. Much farther through literature, we are hopefully able to obtain the achievement of a better life. In Herman Melville's Moby Dick there is revelation of existentialism. Existentialism emphasizes existence rather than essence. Through the characterization of Ahab in the story there is an existence of Ahab's sensed experience. The story tells about Ahab who wants to take revenge on Moby Dick, the white whale which causes him lost his leg. Because of his sorrow of pains there is self-fortifying in his feeling. Ahab must create meaning to survive his existence in which by acting upon it he reach the value of life.
