Description
Summary:Ink and crayon manuscript, mounted on linen. Map possibly drawn by Joseph Kinsey. Scale stated in pencil at lower right, presumably by Thomas C. Harris. Map shows townships, creeks, pocosins, rivers, and roads. Drawn on Whatman paper marked 1867 in compliance with Public Law, Special Session, 1868, c.20, to accompany County Commissioners' report of townships. Townships shown include Tuckahoe, Beaver Creek, Cypress Creek, Trenton, Pollocksville, and White Oak. The North Carolina Constitution of 1868 required counties to "divide . . . into convenient districts, to determine the boundaries and prescribe the names of the said districts, and report the same to the General Assembly before the first day of January, 1869" (Article VII, Section 3). The Public Laws of 1868 further specified that "a map and survey of said districts, when truly completed, [shall] be filed in the office of the Clerk of the Board of Commissioners of each County and the Secretary of State" (Chapter 20, p. 25).
