Summary:UNH CCOM and Stockholm University researchers recently led the geophysical mapping programs for three expeditions throughout the Arctic Ocean aboard the Swedish icebreaker ODEN. Acoustic datasets collected over 18+ weeks at sea include broadband water column backscatter data, multibeam bathymetry, and subbottom profiles in previously unmapped regions. In addition to supporting geophysical sampling target selection in real time, these datasets provide new insights into several geological, glaciological, and oceanographic processes in the rapidly-changing Arctic. This seminar will cover highlights from the expeditions and discuss current research efforts using these unique datasets. Presenter Bio Kevin Jerram Kevin received a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 and completed his MS in Ocean Engineering through CCOM in 2014. He is currently a research scientist at CCOM and gets to spend several months at sea each year. Elizabeth Weidner Elizabeth received a BS in Oceanography from the University of Washington in 2012. She worked for several years as a geophysicist for a hydrographic surveying company before returning to academia. She is currently working on her MS in Earth Science at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping. Christian Stranne Christian Stranne received his Ph.D. (2013) in Physical Oceanography from the University of Gothenburg, where he studied large-scale Arctic sea ice dynamics and coupled ocean-sea ice-atmosphere interactions. He has held a two-year postdoc position at Stockholm University, focusing on methane hydrate dynamics and numerical modelling of multiphase flow in hydrate-bearing marine sediments. Christian is funded by the Swedish Research Council for a three-year research project of which two years are based at CCOM.
