Description
Summary:[eng] Ecological relationships between sponges and other marine organisms (such as polychaetes, crustaceans, algae, etc.) are very common. However, studies on the ecological relationships between foraminifera and sponges are very scarce. Nevertheless, the main goal of this work is to continue with the study of the commensalism between these organisms in the Mediterranean Sea. For that purpose, the different species of benthic and planktonic foraminifera associated with sponges of Pacastrella monilifera, Pachastrella ovisternata, Jaspis sp. and Geodia geodina, collected in the main seamounts of the Mallorca channel in 2018 and 2020 during the surveys of the LIFE-IP-INTEMARES project. A total of 577 foraminiferal shells from 14 different sponges were analyzed. Among them, the most abundant benthic genera were Globocassidulina, Cibicides, Bolivina and Textularia, while the predominant planktonic genera were Globorotalia, Globigerinoides and Globigerina. According to the results, it does not seem to be a specific factor that determines the establishment of the foraminífera biocenosis, concluding that the community depends on a combination of factors, among which could be included the type and morphology of the sponge, the depth, the hydrodynamic pattern of the area and the environmental variables.
