Description
We are living in a time of so-called post-democracy where all the key institutions (such as mass media) that are supposed to work within democracy still exist, but they work for the benefit of the economic and political elites. With the development of global media markets in the 20th century, these trends have become only more obvious in the global mass media. The main side effect of media globalization is the development of commercial mass media and this type of media does not serve the needs of the citizens, but the needs of the market. This master's thesis represents how all these »global trends« are manifested at the institutional level: at the level of public television, journalist practices and production of the news. The focus of my analysis is on a Slovenian TV show titled Studio City that is considered as a credible source of information with high journalist standards in the Slovenian media space. I have researched how the broadcasting of the production of media texts manages to avoid/not avoid »modern market-oriented media logic«. I focused specifically on the media texts dealing with refugee issues. In mainstream media this topic is considered a marginal topic which does not bring profit or political points.
