Description
Summary:[eng] Exceptional Razorbill Alca torda influx in the western Mediterranean and the Balearics. A Razorbill Alca torda influx on the coasts of Catalonia, Valencian Community and the Balearics is analysed via data collected and published by citizen science portals and also by recovered dead birds. From the second ten-day period of November 2022, the most important known influx of Razorbill in the 21st century is recorded within the entire study area, which in the case of Catalonia, entailed 32 times more records than during the nine previous winters. The peak of observations occurs between the 3rd ten-day period of November and the first of December 2022. A minimum approximation of birds observed simultaneously gives a total of 1.075 birds, which recorded a 32.27 % of registered joint mortality, mainly due to poor physical condition. Phenology, bird distribution and observed mortality rates are discussed. The Razorbill influx would have been caused by an evasion from very adverse weather conditions in the Atlantic leading the Razorbills into an area of suboptimal productivity during the winter of 2022-2023.
