Description
Summary:[eng] Winter census of Wildfowl and Shorebirds in the Balearic Islands January 1999. Results of the 1999 winter census of wildfowl and shorebirds from 42 localities of the Balearic Islands are summarised. Over 9.400 individuals belonging to 46 species were recorded. The low results are due to the lack of information on the most important wetland, Albufera de Mallorca. However 5 species surpass the last years average of individuals: Lapwing Vanellus vanellus, Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis, Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria, Greater Flarningo Phoenicopterus ruber and black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus. Is also remarkable the presence of three Spoonbills Platelea leucorodia in Mallorca, in Menorca a Curlew Numenius arquata, and two Purple Gallinule Porphyrio porphyrio this last species extinguised in the rniddle of the current century in Menorca.
