Summary: | Winter censos of Wildfowl and Shorebircls in the Balearic Islands, January 1997. Results of the 1997 winter census of wildfowl and shorebirds from 45 localities of the Balearics islands are sumarized. Over 18.343 individuals belonging to 55 species were recorded. A greater censuring effort with the inclusion of 10 new localities has increased the number of individulas (41%) compared with last year census. The most abundant waterfowl are Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Coot (Folica otra), Teal (Anas crecca), Wigeon (Anas penelope) i Pochard (Aytlnxi ferina): the most abundant shorebirds are Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria), Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrines), Dunlin (Calichris alpina) i Little Stint (Calidris minuta).
