Description
Summary:This paper reviews current conceptual proposals that address the relationship between people and geographic spaces. We argue that the proposals from environmental psychology such as the identity of place and that of attachment to place are insufficient to account for the phenomenon of identification with territories with which there is no direct interaction. Using a social group made up of inhabitants of a gateway to Antarctica as an example of analysis, we reflect on the potential contributions of geographic psychology and classical social psychology. We propose Antarctic social identity as a concept that brings together central aspects of social identification when this arises from a symbolic relationship with a territory that feels proper and common to a social category. In this way, consideration of this alternative to explain identity-related links to geographic imaginaries can be extrapolated to other spaces in which direct experience with environments is not common or possible.
