Summary: | Authors were American educated dentists who became public dentists in Sweden in 1978-9. Cross-cultural experiences are described, since Swedish was not the only ethnic group of patients in the area of Kiruna in northernmost Sweden. Lapplanders and Finns were also patients. Authors describe gingival and periodontal destruction of snuff users with one illustration in color. Noted differences in pain reaction or threshhold for pain: "Compared with Americans (patients in Ohio private practice), we found the rugged frontier people of Kiruna were stoical about dentistry and disdained local anesthetics. Finally we learned to ask before administering them, although we continued to encourage their use for primary-appointment endodontics and extractions."
