Description
Summary:In order to face the biodiversity crisis experienced by the world it is required to create new alternatives for conservation and sustainable use of resources. Avoid species extinction is one of the most important challenge for the humanity during the new century. To preserve those species which are vanishing or limited to very small areas due over exploitation and habitat destruction new and better alternatives must be created. Mexican gray wolf is the one of the five American subspecies living in Mexican territory. According to NOM-059-ECOL-2001 it is “probable extinct in natural environment. Extermination campaigns during 1960’s though 1980’s took the species almost to the extinction, therefore in the middle 80’s a new recovery plan was devised between Mexico and U.S.A. (The Mexican Wolf Recovery plan). This plan support the reproduction of the species, mostly in captivity and reach the number of 324 wolf up to now, from those 102 are in Mexico, all of them in ex situ conservation facilities. This work is a proposal for a conservation and reproduction center, an ex situ facility exclusively for Mexican wolves. Proposal is based on three main aspects for the wolves reproduction and eventual repopulation of wild populations design: 1) Structure, 2) Managing plans and 3) Financing sources. The first of them takes in account not only the physical structure but also personal organization required, in the second part a demographic development plan for the population within the center and a genetic perspective for the future. Also I provide a list of possible sources either for construction or operation of the center as well an abstract of the main legislation that will evolve a center with these purposes. In order to provide better approximation for the center this work locates the proposal on the Izta-Popo National Park; however it can be adapted anywhere in Mexico. The center itself would pursuit the following objectives: To preserve and reproduce Mexican Wolves, Environmental education centered in Mexican wolf ...
