By some bibliographers the author is wrongly supposed to be Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, commander of the expedition; Medina and Leclerc ascribe the historical introduction to Alcalá Galiano, commander of the Sutil, and Cayetano Valdés, commander of the Mexicana. Navarrete (Bibl. mar. esp. t 2, p. 65) states that Espinosa wrote the "Relacion" and that he himself wrote the introduction. Penciled note on front fly leaf of atlas: "J. Robinson's. N. B.--The Journal and appendix illustrative of these charts, maps and surveys, were lent by me to Mr. J. Q. Adams, secretary of state, of the United States, in 1824, and have not been returned, in consequence, as he stated, of their being mislead [!] Only one copy besides mine referred to, are in the United Stes, and that in the hands of Mr. Foresyth--chairman of the committee of foreign relations.
