Summary: | By some bibliographers the author is wrongly supposed to be Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, commander of the expedition; Medina and Leclerc ascribe the historical introduction to Alcalá Galiano, commander of the Sutil, and Cayetano Valdés, commander of the Mexicana. Navarrete (Bibl. mar. esp. t 2, p. 65) states that Espinosa wrote the "Relacion" and that he himself wrote the introduction. Penciled note on front fly leaf of atlas: "J. Robinson's. N. B.--The Journal and appendix illustrative of these charts, maps and surveys, were lent by me to Mr. J. Q. Adams, secretary of state, of the United States, in 1824, and have not been returned, in consequence, as he stated, of their being mislead [!] Only one copy besides mine referred to, are in the United Stes, and that in the hands of Mr. Foresyth--chairman of the committee of foreign relations. J. R.--. Washington city February 1826." The atlas has title: Atlas para el viage de las goletas Sutil y Mexicana el reconocimiento del estrecho de Juan de Fuca en 1792, publicado en 1802 (2 p.l., 17 pl. (part. fold. incl. 9 maps)) "Vocabulario del idioma de los habitantes de Nutka": p. 178-184. Includes bibliographical references. Mode of access: Internet.
