Description
Summary:• Dr. Donald H. Curie, of United States Health Service and chief physician of Boston port, has contracted influenza. Confined to bed and reported to be “seriously ill.” Therefore, unable to respond to Dr. Woodward’s charge that influenza entered the United States through Port of Boston. • Dr. Eugene Kelley: “most doctors agree that this disease, which we do not know how to control, did enter the country through this port. However, I don’t believe blame for the failure to kee it out can be attached to anyone. For instance, we know of the efforts which the United States government took to prevent the spread of influenza to Alaska. Sailors were examined, cargoes were fumigated and every precaution taken to prevent a boat for Alaska from transporting the disease. The ship went to Alaska, discharged its cargo and was on the way back when the disease broke out among the crew. Later it sprung up in Nome, Alaska and spread through all the north country. It has been impossible to keep it entirely out of any place. It has been spreading over the entire world.” Newspaper article 5
