Priestley's main concern was to re-establish adequate funding and community support for the Univ. Frustrated in his attempts, he became V-C of the Univ. of Birmingham and left Melb. in 1938. Priestley acted as an adviser to the BBC and after his retirement in 1952 he served as chairman of the royal commission on civil service and on a series of boards and associations.
