Description
Summary:Educated at University College, Priestley was appointed geologist to Shackleton's 1907 to 1909 antarctic expedition and Scott's expedition 1910 to 1913. After war service where he received the Military Cross, Priestley resumed an academic and admin. career at Cambridge. In 1934 he reluctantly became the first salaried V-C of Melb. Univ. Priestley's main concern was to re-establish adequate funding and community support for the Univ. Frustrated in his attempts, he became V-C of the Univ. of Birmingham and left Melb. in 1938. Priestley acted as an adviser to the BBC and after his retirement in 1952 he served as chairman of the royal commission on civil service and on a series of boards and associations.
