Description
Summary:This report is a fire safety evaluation of Norrbottensteatern in Luleå, Sweden. The report was carried out as a part of the education program for fire engineers. The main purpose was to analyse the safety regarding evacuation in case of fire, and to present a proposal of measures if necessary. The theatre, built in 1986, is a four storey building and can hold more than 600 guests in its three salons. It also has a restaurant that seats 50 guests, as well as offices, dressing rooms, workshops etc. Three scenarios, all likely to occur and with severe consequences, were chosen. These were Fire in the cloakroom (in the theatre foyer), Fire beneath the seats (in salon 1) and Fire on the stage (in salon 2). The time until critical conditions were reached was calculated with CFAST and with calculations by hand. These were compared with the evacuation times calculated by Simulex. All three scenarios showed that there is a need for further improvements of the fire safety at the theatre. However, most things can be solved with simple measures like education of the staff, new and better exit signs and better or restored evacuation door handles.
