Description
Summary:Bean Geese Anser fabalis have been neck-banded extensivelyin the breeding areas in northern Finland duringtwo periods: 1978–1994 and 2002–2009. The observationsof these geese showed marked differences in timingof migration and location of wintering and stagingareas between the two periods. The Bean Geese stayedfurther to the north in south Sweden during the autumnin the latter period and arrived later to wintering areas insouthernmost Sweden. Moreover they did not go to theNetherlands and western Germany during cold winters inthe second as they did in the first period. Spring migrationstarted earlier in the second period. Most patterns revealedby the Finnish neck-banded geese were the sameas those shown by the Bean Geese in general as observedby the national goose counts in southern Sweden.
