Summary: | This chapter examines Arctic security from the point of view of Finland. It follows a non-traditional approach to security and security policy, emphasizing environment/environmental protection, as well as cooperation, confidence-building, and stability as security factors. It first describes the state of Arctic security in the 2010s, and then analyses its geopolitical, environmental, and security importance for Finland. Second, it discusses potential areas of confrontation and cooperation among the Arctic states. Finally, it briefly explores the ways though which Finland may promote individually – and in concert with other Arctic states – security cooperation and responses to substantial (environmental) challenges in the Arctic. |
