Description
Summary:This photographic work and text was created for the network project for which the German artist Birgit Jensen invited 130 artists from all over the world. She involved a large range of different artistic personalities in an artistic-communicative dialogue. She asked them how they, as visual artists, respond to the latest developments in a globalized world. What position do they take and how do the changes and attendant social tensions and conflicts influence their work? How do they position themselves in relation to the transformations of our society and its various different local impacts? Every participant was invited to send an image and a text file by e-mail, which Birgit Jensen could print out and install as an exhibition. The response to her inquiry was unexpectedly enormous and very exciting. A vast spectrum of answers were sent back. Each expression of the 130 artists reflects another aspect of our time, be it philosophical, social, political, economical or ecological. Every response relates to a different point of view. It shows that artistic thinking is rooted in a specific social experience. More than half of the participants are not German. They come from 32 different countries, from all continents (Austria, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Ireland, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Kosovo, Poland, Turkey, Italy, Isreal, Greece, Cyprus, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Algeria, Cameroon, Togo, Senegal, Argentina, Chile, Iran, Japan, South Korea, China, India, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and USA). The images include all types of media of contemporary art: painting, sculpture, photography, conceptual work, video stills, installation work, comic art, drawing, performance, abstract and figurative work, etc. The exhibition „Flugblätter “ was originally presented in „Künstler Gut Loitz e. V. “ in Loitz an der Peene in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/Germany in August 2017 (in collaboration with Barbara Camilla Tucholski). In March 2018 it was shown in the exhibition space of „Pictura" in Dordrecht/Netherlands (in collaboration with Teresiña Talarico and within a wall-painting concept of Sigmund de Jong). In September 2018 the Flying Letters was exhibited in Maebashi/Japan. The exhibition was co-curated by Kenzo Onoda. In 2019 the project was exhibited at Cross Lane Projects in Kendal, England. A book was published in May and launched at Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf with readings from some of the texts.
