Description
Summary:Wegener, U.; Karste, G.: Investigations of succession in a matgarden near the Brocken in the Hochharz National Park. - Hercynia N.F. 36 (2003): 197–216.From 1979 to 1990 a mat garden was developed on the mountain of Renneckenberg, a location which is not far from the Brocken. This garden located at the foot of the “Zeterklippe” (a granite cliff on Renneckenberg) was used as a substitute for the Alpine Botanical Garden on the summit of the Brocken, which was not accessible from 1969 to 1989. The transplantation of selected Brocken plants (such as Pulsatilla alba, Hieracium alpinum, Salix bicolor and Betula nana and others) and their subsequent development is documented in this report. After 1990 these plant beds were extensive by cared for and the ones at Renneckenberg were basically left alone. During this time a spontaneous colonization of three species of club mosses (Diphasiastrum complanatum, Lycopodium clavatum and Huperzia selago) occured. The dynamics of these types of plants as well as various forms of Pulsatilla alba and Hieracium-species will be discussed. Since 1992 the area has been mowed annually and the gradual transformation of the Nardus and Calluna rich mat is almost complete. In the future there will be no further use of the mat garden. The previous work of voluntary environ-volunteers mentalists who had cared for this area will also be honoured ever recognised in this paper.
