Summary:Karelia has always been a place of utopias andmemories in Finland. The images that we have ofthis area tend to originate in national projectsand Karelianism. The Isthmus belonged to Finlanduntil 1939. After World War II a total of 430 000evacuees, 407 000 of whom were Karelians, wereresettled in different parts of Finland. The articleconcentrates on the memories and utopias of theKarelian evacuees. Karelia is not just an abstractionbut a place of memories and utopias for Karelianevacuees. Their utopias are different than those ofsupporters of Karelianism because of their miseryand dreams about going back there.
