Il a été professeur d’anthropologie sociale à Bergen de 1961 à 1972, puis à Oslo de 1972 à 1985. Attaché au travail de terrain, il s’est consacré à de multiples zones d’observation : Kurdistan irakien, Iran, Pakistan, Soudan, Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée, Oman, Bali, Bhoutan, sans oublier ses recherches sur la Norvège septentrionale.
