Description
Summary:AbstractFor libraries, internet represents a new challenge, calling for ordering the huge number of its electronic resources. Besides selection, monitoring changes, archiving etc., processing is just one of the problems libraries have to deal with. Full cataloguing is a time-consuming and therefore expensive procedure. An idea came up to introduce a simplified processing to electronic resources creators so that they would take responsibility to increase the availability of their works themselves. The so called metadata contain the same elements as the libraries’ bibliographic records, but are reduced in number and stored in a format less structured than MARC-formats. The quality of nonprofessional processing may be rather low so collaboration with librarians is recommended, modelled upon the CIP-programme. Libraries themselves may decide to use metadata for cataloguing less important electronic resources. A union metadata database, run as an international project and supported by necessary tools, might compete with commercial browsers.
