Description
Summary:Although the gender relations on the labour market and the impact of the financial crisis on migration processes are both the subjects of recurrent research, these issues rarely have been analyzed simultaneously. The purpose of this article is to combine both perspectives and discuss the diversity in the consequences of the finical crisis on the situation of Polish male and female migrants in Iceland. Furthermore, it presents the effects of the economic recession on the migration processes between the two countries - a decrease in the immigration flow, an increase in return migration, a reduction of remittances. In the latter part, an attempt is made to evaluate the impact of the changes observed in the receiving country on the situation in the sending country. The analyses show that during the recession the position of men and women on the Icelandic labour market was significantly different. Lay-offs affected mainly male migrants, a majority of whom worked in the construction industry, which was hit by the crisis most severely. In turn, the worsening financial situation of Polish migrants impacted their families in Poland, and moreover - through the multiplier effect - also the economies of the sending regions.
