| Summary: | The melting of the ice floe and a media discourse complacently staging fabulous hydrocarbon deposits in the Arctic have supported the idea of a race for the appropriation of Arctic maritime spaces by the riparian States. This idea was supported by the planting of the Russian flag at the North Pole in 2007, overlapping claims to extended continental shelves in this area, and the multiplication of oceanographic missions in the Arctic to map the seabed. In fact, States cooperate much more than they oppose in the region.
