Le Petit Nord de Saint-Malo

From the end of the 1580s onwards, the Malouins played a major role in Newfoundland in the struggle against the Inuit, asserting their dominance and their military power. This contributed to defining a protected zone on Newfoundland’s north coast, conceptualised as a coherent country of exploitation: le Petit Nord. To defend it, the Malouins fought a real naval war with the « warlike » indigenous population. During the first half of the seventeenth century, with royal authorisation and the financial contribution of the others Breton ports, armed escorts of 70-80 seamen-soldiers, and patrol boats with all the necessary weapons looked after Bretons fisheries. À partir de la fin des années 1580, les Malouins jouèrent à Terre Neuve un rôle majeur dans le conflit avec les Inuits, qui y accentua leur domination commerciale et leur puissance militaire. Cela contribua à déterminer la zone protégée par Saint-Malo sur la côte nord de Terre-Neuve, conceptualisée comme un pays cohérent d’exploitation : le Petit Nord. Pour le défendre, les Malouins livrèrent une vraie guerre navale aux autochtones « belliqueux ». Dans la première moitié du xvii e siècle, soutenues par des autorisations royales et la contribution financière d’autres ports bretons impliqués dans la pêche, des escortes armées de 70 ou 80 marins-soldats, 6 pataches comme patrouilleurs, avec toutes les armes nécessaires, surveillèrent les pêcheries.
