The Malecite First Nation of Viger is the 11th First Nation recognized in Quebec and the only one whose members live entirely as a diaspora. The Nation faces important challenges including communication with members and heightening their sense of belonging, developing local partnerships and re-establishing its members in a common place for the fragmented community they form. Since its official reestablishment in 1987, this community has worked persistently to reaffirm its identity, in particular through a land claims process in Québec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region. This article explores issues of identity and territoriality for the Malecites of Viger with particular emphasis on how Malecite identity is shaped and maintained and the steps taken to advance the Nation’s social and territory-based project in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, in collaboration with federal, provincial and regional bodies. La Première Nation Malécite de Viger est la 11e Première Nation reconnue au Québec et la seule dont les membres vivent entièrement en diaspora. La communauté fait face à des défis cruciaux tels la communication avec ses membres, le développement d’un sentiment d’appartenance, la concertation locale et le regroupement de ses membres en un même lieu. Depuis sa reconstitution officielle, en 1987, la communauté vit une réaffirmation identitaire qui s’exprime, entre autres, à travers un ensemble de revendications territoriales dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent. Cet article porte sur l’identité et la territorialité des Malécites de Viger, notamment sur les moyens par lesquels les acteurs produisent et perpétuent l’identité, et les mesures mises en place pour faire avancer leur projet socioterritorial dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent, en concertation avec les instances fédérales, provinciales et régionales.
