Description
Summary:Development of the Nunavik Nickel mining project required the construction of a dam-bridge at the outlet of Lac du Bombardier (Nunavik, Québec, Canada). A fishway was incorporated into the dam-bridge complex to allow fish (primarily Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) to move between the Puvirnituq River and the lake. Following completion of the fishway in 2012, it was inspected and its effectiveness assessed using the compute rized IchtyoSTM system. Inspection work confirmed that the fishway complied with the design criteria; however, some minor corrective work was conducted in spring 2013, to improve the attractiveness to fish of water flowing through the fishway. Between July and September 2012, the IchtyoSTM system recorded 166 fish passage events, which corresponded to 114 lake trout, 45 Arctic char and 7 unidentified fishes. A peak in upstream migration occurred during the third week of August, which was correlated with an increase in the lake water level that started in mid-August. The upstream migration was dominated by lake trout in July and August, and by Arctic char in September. The information recorded by the IchtyoS™ system confirmed the effectiveness of the fishway with regard to the free passage of upstream migrating Arctic char and lake trout.
