Description
Summary:3 fig., 11 tab. International audience The cave Kozarnika, situated in the Northwest of Bulgaria near the plain of Danube, in approximately 3 km of the village of Orechets (district of Belogradtchik) and in some 30 km of the Serbian border. This cavity is the object of excavations for 3 years by a Bulgaro-French team steered by N. Sirakov (BAS) and J.-L. Guadelli (CNRS). The deposits, recognized until now on 6,80 m of depth, cover the last 800 millenniums and the chronocultural sequence contains of the base in the summit: an industry for the moment not definite dated about 780.000 years, Middle Palaeolithic, archaic Upper Palaeolithic, Gravettian, Epigravettian and post-palaeolithic levels. The fauna presented within the framework of this preliminary note results from Gravettian levels are dated between 26 and 11 Kyrs BP (isotopic stage 2). The fauna contains 5106 remains but only 241 were able to be determined because of a very strong rate of fragmentation. The identified taxa are the following ones: Crocuta crocuta spelaea, Vulpes vulpes, Ursus spelaeus, Cervus elaphus, Megaloceros cf. giganteus, Alces alces, Rangifer tarandus, Capra cf. ibex, Bison priscus, Bovinae ind., Equus caballus cf. germanicus. We shall note the presence of the Reindeer for the first time indicated to the South of the Danube as well as the existence of an original bone industry which delivered among others a real bone point with notch.
