Description
Summary:International audience In this article, I follow the missionaries' activities in the 18th-19th centuries in Northern Russia. There have been two main missions by the Westernmost peoples of the North before the 20th century: the first is Filofey Leshchinski's, in Western Siberia, from 1712 to 1725. The second is Archimandrite Veniamin's by the European Nenets from 1825 and 1830. I study these two mission experiences and wonder about the methods implemente by both men and about the conditions for the success of their endeavours. I emphasise the increased role of words and speech in their practice.
