Rapport I-2. Teneur en éléments traces dans la glace : variations temporelles liées à l’activité humaine et au climat
After having discussed the relation between the contents of trace elements measured respectively in snow and air, different methods used to determine the origin of these impurities are examined. Limiting their studies to the cold ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland and to research work concerning...

Limiting their studies to the cold ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland and to research work concerning temporal variations in the contents of trace elements linked to human activity and to climate, the authors examine successively evolution of fall-out from different elements : a) lead fall-out (it increases by a factor of 20 between pre-industrial and the present-day period in Greenland) b) sulfate fall-out (in Greenland anthropogenic contribution is equal to natural deposits) c) artificial radioisotopes (the fall-out of which can be found in both the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere following nuclear explosions). On a much longer time scale, different explanations that could account for the higher trace element values observed in the polar ice-sheets snow deposited during the ultimate phase of the last glaciation are examined.
