| Summary: | `titrebGeorgia 2003 A Peaceful Succession `/titreb The "Revolution of roses" which followed on the rigged November 2nd 2003 election ended the corrupt and completely discredited regime of Edward Shevardnadze and brought back hope to the Georgian people. After the demonstrations which brought together thousands of people to protest the official results and to demand the victory of the unified opposition, the "White Fox" handed in his resignation. On January 4, 2004, Mikhail Saakashvili, aged 36, was triumphally elected head of this caucasian State. Georgia's problems are, of course, far from resolved, between the Moscow's obvious hostility towards the new authorities, and the still unresolved problem of the separatist regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as the, at the very least, malevolent attitude of the president of the Adjari Republic, who rests on his privileges. Economically, Georgia is ridden with corruption and has practically suspended payments, despite a return to growth (8.3 % for the first nine months of 2003), largely attributable to the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. However, its not keeping to its engagements, in particular with regard to reducing the budget deficit, delayed repayment of debts and the misappropriation of funds from international financial organizations, caused the IMF to abandon Georgia and to refuse to act in its defense before the Paris Club. After the political changeover, the international financial community announced that it was once again ready to provide aid to Georgia.
