Our research concerns the Gespeg Mi’gmaq community which started its community forestry project 15 years ago near the town of Gaspé in Québec. Research objectives were to: 1) define perceptions, expectations and needs of the Gespeg Mi’gmaq community regarding forestry and their involvement in a community forestry; 2) understand the direction the Gespeg community wanted to give to its community forestry project. To do so, wetook up residence in Gespeg, conducted interviews and literature reviews, using a collaborative approach with the community to define their vision and their objectives. Our research allowed us to determine the specific nature of Gespeg community expectations, which is a cultural and identity focus rather than an economic one, and their diverse objectives about their territory and the forest. This finding suggests the need to explore a distinct territorial and forest governance model adapted to the aboriginal context. Cet article s’intéresse aux Mi’gmaq de Gespeg, qui participent à des initiatives en foresterie communautaire depuis plus de quinze ans près de la ville de Gaspé, au Québec. Les auteurs tentent de définir ici les perceptions et les attentes de cette communauté dans ce domaine, ainsi que son engagement en foresterie communautaire, et de comprendre la direction qu’elle souhaite prendre dans son projet forestier. Dans ce but, ils ont effectué des séjours, des recherches documentaires et des entretiens dans une démarche collaborative avec la communauté, pour préciser sa vision et ses objectifs – ce qui a permis de conclure à la spécificité de ses attentes, plutôt culturelles et identitaires qu’économiques concernant le territoire et la forêt. Les résultats obtenus suggèrent la pertinence d’explorer une gouvernance territoriale et forestière innovante et adaptée au contexte autochtone.
