Introduction Nikolaus Tinbergen est né en 1907 aux Pays-Bas dans la ville de La Haye. Il étudia la biologie à l’université de Leiden, et y soutint sa thèse en 1932. Tinbergen partit en 1933 pour une expédition au Groenland puis revint travailler aux Pays-Bas en tant qu’assistant au département de zoologie. Après la seconde guerre mondiale, durant laquelle il fut emprisonné dans un camp de travail, il devint professeur de zoologie à l’université de Leiden. En 1949 il devint maître de conférenc. Introduction Nikolaus Tinbergen were born in the Netherlands in the city of The Hague in 1907. He studied biology at the University of Leiden and defended his thesis in 1932. Tinbergen left in 1933 for a shipment to Greenland and then restarted to work in the Netherlands as an assistant to the Zoology Department. After the Second World War, during which he was imprisoned in a labour camp, he became a professor of zoology at the University of Leiden. In 1949 he became senior lecturer.
