Summary:In 2007 the new grinding strategy with “Malmbanan”, Europe’s only heavy-haul railway, has been presented at the IHHA-conference in Kiruna. Four years later an update was given, as in between some adaptations concerning the target profiles and the metal removal requirements have been introduced. The monitoring process on selected test sections using MiniProf- and Eddy-current devices never stopped and provided since valuable understanding of the effect of applying optimized specifications. This was particular important in view of the increasing traffic load and the hence required doubling of the yearly grinding campaigns. The combination of the once fixed routine grinding operations with the research activities resulted in a consistently good rail surface situation and revealed further insight in the complex matter of wheel-rail interaction.
