Description
Summary:p. 24-26. The Redfish, Sciaenops ocellata, a member of the croaker family and a fine food and game fish, has many aliases. On the Atlantic Coast it is known as the channel bass or red drum. In Mexico, it is know as pescado colorado or simply colorado. The local term rat red usually applies to immature fish of eight to 12 pounds while bull red means a mature spawner. However, the meanings are not precise and one man's rat may be another's bull. Most people just say red. Reds occur along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts southward into Mexico but probably not as far as Vera Cruz. They inhabit the bays and the Gulf but should not be confused with red snapper which are deeper-water, offshore, reef- dwelling fish. http://gbic.tamug.edu/request.htm
