Description
Summary:A fishing boat built by Searle and Son, Birkenhead, S.A., superseded and sold to the Catholic Diocese in Darwin. Renamed Margaret Mary. Her fishing partitions were pulled out and she was converted to a cargo boat, and sailed to Gladstone, Qld and handed over to Eddie Bennett. Who sailed her to Darwin. One crew member was Paddy Dalton who was working his passage to Darwin. It was then used to carry cargo from Darwin to Port Keats, Melville and Bathurst Island missions. When Alfonso Cubillo left the St. Francis Bennett took over and Brother Ainsworth skippered the Margaret Mary with Mick Davis as crew. When Ainsworth left her in September her in September 1955, Bob Brennan skippered for 10 years till she was wrecked. Quote from her log "Margaret Mary lost at sea on fish reef 6.5 miles from Grosse Island on 18 November 1965, Bob Brennan master." Mick Davis states she was a 60 foot colin archer (double ender) boat and (at 9 to 10 knots) was probably the fastest sailing vessel in Darwin. Date:1953
