Description
Summary:The purpose of this article is to examine how Irish English has been created and developed. Specifically, the article aims to reveal the usage and variety of the 2nd person pronouns of Irish English. According to the history of Ireland, there had been many influences though foreign countries and invaders or settlers such as Romans, Anglo-Norman, Scots, British, Vikings etc. With Anglo-Norman invasions of the twelfth century, UK ruled Ireland to establish the English language. On the contrary, ironically, it was the Irish who were to help spread English to other countries including Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland. As regards as usage and variety of the 2nd person pronouns, a difference between the singular second person pronoun you and plural second person pronoun ye can be found in many works. During the Old and the Middle English periods there were various variations and usage, but as time went on, during the Middle English period you become the most common form for both singular and plural. departmental bulletin paper
