| Summary: | Ce présent travail traite de la construction de la géographie comme « science moderne ». Notre recherche s’intéresse plus particulièrement à la place de l’imaginaire dans la fabrication de la science géographique. La modernité signifie-t-elle absence d’imagination ? Pour répondre à cette interrogation, nous avons étudié le traitement accordé à un mythe géographique : le Continent Austral. Au travers de son histoire et de ses représentations, nous avons avons souhaité démontrer le rôle de l’imaginaire comme agent dans la construction de la géographie moderne. This present work is about the construction of geography as a "modern science". Our research focuses more particularly on the place of the imagination in the production of geographical science. Does modernity mean lack of imagination ? To answer this question, we studied the treatment given to a geographical myth: the Southern Continent. Through its history and its representations, we wanted to demonstrate the role of the imagination as an agent in the construction of modern geography.
